Organizational Psychology at Work

candidate screening by organizational psychologist

Australian Psychological Society Psychologist

Introduction
Large organizations throughout the world employ their own in-house organizational psychologists. They call upon these psychologists to assist in the design and development of the recruitment and selection process, among other roles. Within the selection interview, the occupational psychologist is able to bring scientific tools and principles, as well as expertise in the application of ability and personality theory in the workplace. The end result is an enhanced ability to predict the likely performance of job applicants. PsyAsia International's Psychologist on Call™ service provides the same services as would typically be offered by in-house organizational psychologists to organizations who do not currently use these individuals or whose own psychologists are engaged in other tasks or where an external perspective is required.

Sample Process (customised to each client)

  • Job Profile – we assist in the creation of an ideal job profile by examining the job description, competency profile and any other information that you may have about the job. Additionally, we consult international competency and behavioural indicator databases to provide us with a clear understanding of the job. We also request that at least 3 experts in the requirements of the job complete our online job profile questionnaire. We will produce a personality-based profile from this and discuss any discrepancies between raters in order to arrive at an agreed-upon profile.
  • Test setup – we setup the relevant assessments within our system and either an email invite goes to the candidate asking them to complete the assessment(s) or they will come to us or our parners in person to do so.
  • Test – the respondent(s) complete the relevant tests.
  • Score – we score the tests.
  • Report – we provide a detailed narrative report on each respondent (typically 10-12 pages).
  • Interview by telephone – we contact each respondent by telephone or meet with them face-to-face to provide them both with feedback (best practice requirement) and obtain information from the respondent to (a) corroborate the personality profile (b) elicit additional behavioural evidence in relation to the competency framework.
  • Final report – all of the above information is written into a final report for the client. The final report will also contain an interview prompt report that the selection committee can use at final interview. These prompts are based on similarities and discrepancies between the candidate’s profile and the ideal profile. Where more than 1 candidate has been assessed, a rank order chart will also be provided. This will illustrate the degree of match between each candidate and the ideal profile.
  • Feedback to client – we then contact the client by telephone (or arrange a meeting if in Hong Kong or Singapore for a small additional fee) to report back on the findings and run through the written report in detail so that the client fully understands the report and its ramifications. This final session typically takes 45-60 minutes.

Optional service
Incorporating the findings into the full assessment process

At the initial competency development stage, PsyAsia International can assist the client in developing a complete scientific selection model. Based on the competency framework and other requirements, we will develop a selection method grid and through discussion with the client, devise weightings and ratings and apply these to each part or exercise of the selection process. The client will then provide us with scores throughout (e.g., scores based on application form, work-directed references, assessment centre) the process and we will provide the client with a final excel worksheet that incorporates all of the information and ranks the group of applicants against the requirements based on the assigned weightings and ratings for each exercise and methodology used. Please advise us if you wish to use this service and we will provide an additional quotation accordingly.

Timescales
The above process can be undertaken within a very short time-frame provided PsyAsia has available Psychologists. Advance booking is however recommended.

Out of country applicants & Expatriate Assignments
PsyAsia International can assess your out of country/expatriate applicants by using online-only psychometric assessments and running the one-hour interview by telephone. This enables assessment of individuals anywhere in the world provided they have access to an internet-connected computer and a telephone.

Fees
Fees vary depending on the amount of work required in establishing the required competencies etc., the number of tests used, whether we go to the client's premises or the applicants come to PsyAsia's premises and whether the verbal feedback provided to the decision-maker is by telephone or in-person. The average fee is around €450/HK$5000/SG$1000/AU$750 per candidate with discounts available where testing/interviewing 4 or more candidates on the same day or 6 or more candidates in total. Fees include psychometric assessment payment to test publisher. Please contact our Consultancy department for more details.

Note
PsyAsia's psychologists do not involve themselves in the final decision given that this should be based on a multitude of other factors that we may not have access to, such as previous work experience, current organizational environment, references etc.
